Fedora 25 Linux arrives, brings in new features

Image result for Fedora 25 Linux arrives, brings in new featuresThe Fedora Project has announced the availability of Fedora 25, which it terms the next big step in its “journey into the containerized, modular future.”

Fedora is a global community that works together to lead the advancement of free and open source software. As part of the community’s mission the project delivers three editions, each one a free, Linux-based operating system tailored to meet specific use cases: Fedora 25 Atomic Host, Fedora 25 Server, and Fedora 25 Workstation.

Each edition is built from a common set of base packages, which form the foundation of the Fedora operating system. As with all new versions of Fedora, Fedora 25 provides many bug fixes and tweaks to these underlying components including:

* Docker 1.12 for building and running containerized applications

* Node.js 6.5, the latest version of the popular server-side JavaScript engine

* Support for Rust, a faster and more stable system programming language

* Multiple Python versions — 2.6, 2.7, 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5 — to help run test suites across several Python configurations, as well as PyPy, PyPy3 and Jython.

Fedora Workstation
Providing many of the latest open source developer and desktop tools, Fedora 25 Workstation delivers a host of new features, including the long-awaited official debut of the Wayland display server. Replacing the legacy X11 system, Wayland has been under development for several years and seeks to provide a smoother, richer experience for graphical environments and better capabilities for modern graphics hardware. To further enhance ease-of-use, Fedora 25 Workstation also features GNOME 3.22, which offers multiple file renaming, a redesigned keyboard settings tool and additional user interface improvements. Workstation users will also be pleased with the inclusion of decoding support for the MP3 media format.

Microsoft to bring SQL database software to Linux users

Fedora 25 Workstation now makes it easier to for Windows and OS X users to get started, with Fedora Media Writer serving as the default download for those operating systems. This tool helps users find and download the current Fedora release and write it to removable media, like a USB stick, allowing potential Fedora users to “test drive” the operating system from that media environment. Fedora can then be installed to their systems with the same process.

For current Fedora users, the upgrade path from Fedora 24 to Fedora 25 has been simplified and streamlined, with typical upgrades taking less than 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network speed. Upgrades can be started from the command line or from the GNOME Software tool, just like regular security and bugfix updates.

For developers, beyond the new docker engine and language support included in the base Fedora 25 packages, Fedora 25 Workstation introduces improved Flatpak support. This tweak makes it easier to install, update and remove Flatpak software and enables this application packaging standard to be more user friendly at the workstation level.

GNOME Shell extensions are also no longer checked for compatibility with the current version of the Shell. This was originally required because the GNOME interfaces were changing rapidly during the early days of GNOME 3. Now these interfaces have stabilized, and extensions can generally be expected to work with new releases.

Paytm Pulls the Plug on App POS Rollout

Paytm Pulls the Plug on App POS RolloutOn Wednesday Paytm announced the launch of an app POS system under which any merchant using Paytm would be able to accept payments using credit or debit cards, without the need for a physical card reader. This is a huge cost saving feature that would enable small vendors to accept cards. However, many people raised security concerns with the implementation, and now, just a day after the launch, Paytm has stated on its blog that it is delaying making the feature available to merchants.

In the blog, Paytm stated that it has held several discussions with stakeholders on how to make the process more secure, and that it will be adding more features and certifications to improve security before enabling it for merchants. According to Paytm, it will relaunch the product as soon as it has been updated, and that it is “working closely with everyone in the cards ecosystem with the commitment to expand digital payment acceptance in the country.”

The company added that “Nothing is more important to us than customer data and privacy. We will always put this above all without fail.”

The current implementation already includes two-factor authentication and Paytm is a PCI DSS certified company – Paytm assured users in the blog post that it does not store any card details, in either the Paytm app or on its servers; however it did not specify what additional security features it will be implementing.

WhatsApp Extends Support for BlackBerry, Nokia Platforms Till June 2017

WhatsApp Extends Support for BlackBerry, Nokia Platforms Till June 2017WhatsApp has confirmed that it will extend its support for BlackBerry platform in what could be seen as the most relieving news for BlackBerry users. The most widely used messaging service earlier this year had announced that it will drop support for several mobile operating systems from 2017, including BlackBerry’s and Nokia’s operating systems.

The company updated its support page and added, “We will soon be ending support for certain devices. On June 30, 2017, we will no longer support the following platforms: BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40, and Nokia Symbian S60.”

WhatsApp however confirmed those users on Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 as well as Windows Phone 7 won’t be able to use WhatsApp at the beginning of 2017. The messaging app will no longer be supported on iPhone 3GS or devices running iOS 6.

“These platforms don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android running OS 2.3+, a Windows Phone 8+, or an iPhone running iOS 7+ before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.”

WhatsApp informs that there is currently no option to transfer chat history between platforms though the company can provide chat history attached to an email, if requested by users.

The messaging service had previously emphasised how much the market changed in the years since WhatsApp was launched in 2009. Previously, Android and iOS platforms were running on less than 25 percent of the devices, while BlackBerry and Nokia’s operating systems dominated the market with roughly a 70 percent share. WhatsApp’s decision to pull the plug on Symbian and BlackBerry however recaps how the platforms have lost popularity.

Soon after WhatsApp’s announcement to end support for BlackBerry, the Canadian company expressed its disappointment with WhatsApp’s decision to abandon its platform.

OnePlus 3T Name Seemingly Confirmed by Company Website Hours Before Launch

OnePlus 3T Name Seemingly Confirmed by Company Website Hours Before LaunchEarlier this month, OnePlus confirmed that it will be launching its next device with Snapdragon 821 processor on November 15. The company’s teasers from earlier this week further suggested that it will launch OnePlus 3T smartphone at its event on Tuesday, which kicks off at 11:30pm IST. Now, the company’s website has seemingly confirmed the name ‘OnePlus 3T’ for the smartphone.

The company’s website is currently showing the ‘error 404’ page with a fun little mini-game if you try adjusting the URL by adding ‘3t’ at the end and reach the page “http://oneplus.net/3t” reports Phone Arena. The report notes that this custom error 404 page could not be accessed by any of the other URL adjustments that were tried – we tried as well, and were also unable to reproduce the special 404 page.

This indicates that the smartphone will indeed be named ‘OnePlus 3T’ and as it is company’s official site, the name seems to be all but confirmed.
Earlier leaks have suggested that the OnePlus 3T will come with Sony’s latest IMX398 sensor onboard. It is further expected to sport an Optic AMOLED display and run on Android 7.0 Nougat-based OxygenOS. It is expected to house a large 3300mAh battery.
The Snapdragon 821 chipset on the smartphone will be paired with 6GB of RAM and the smartphone is tipped to come in storage options of 32GB and 64GB. The OnePlus 3T is expected to be priced at $479 (roughly Rs. 32,100) – $80 more than the OnePlus 3, which is priced at Rs. 27,999 in India.

As all these leaked specifications have not been confirmed by the company, we will have to wait till the official announcement by the company. However, as the launch is scheduled to be later on Tuesday, we will not have to wait long for the confirmation.
