Apple AirPods Pack a Tiny 93 Milliwatt Battery and Are Durable Against Impact and Water, Tests Reveal

Apple’s AirPods will start shipping Wednesday but the durability tests and teardowns have already been performed on the product and are available on the Internet. Surprisingly, the durability tests have revealed that the wireless earphones from Apple are able to withstand falls from several feet above the ground as well as shows resistance to water. The teardowns have further revealed that AirPods come with a tiny 93 milliwatt battery and pack the components in a very compact manner inside.

Apple AirPods Pack a Tiny 93 Milliwatt Battery and Are Durable Against Impact and Water, Tests RevealEven though Apple has not marketed the AirPods as water resistant earphones, they were able to come out unscathed from a washing cycle inside a washing machine, as shown in the video posted on YouTube channel EverythingApplePro. As per the tester, even after being through the washing cycle, the AirPods sounded just as good as they did before.

In the durability tests, the pair of earphones were dropped, with and without the case, from several different heights but apart from a few scuffs on the case, the falls couldn’t seemingly damage the AirPods in any way. The tester claimed that there was no noticeable difference in the sound from earphones after the drop tests were performed.
In the meanwhile, in an iFixit teardown of the AirPods that also reported the earphones are difficult to recycle, it was found that the wireless earphones come with a tiny 93 milliwatt battery. The circuit board, which includes a W1 chip among other components, is located at the rounded part of the earpiece.
The teardown of the case for AirPods further revealed that just like the ear-pieces, the case comes with jam-packed components as well. As components are glued together in an extremely compact manner, iFixit gave AirPods a repairability score of zero out of ten to indicate that its virtually impossible to repair the wireless earphones if they get damaged.

Notably, even though AirPods showed durability during the tests, they popped out of their case and bounced-off the ground several times during the tests. This indicates that it might be fairly easy to lose them if they do fall from users’ pocket.

Apple, HP, Samsung, Others Pledge to Keep Children Out of Cobalt Mines

Separate groups of the world’s leading technology companies are launching two initiatives to curb “the worst forms of child labour” and other abusive practices in the supply chain for cobalt, a key ingredient in lithium-ion batteries that power smartphones, laptops and electric cars.

Apple, HP, Samsung, Others Pledge to Keep Children Out of Cobalt MinesAbout 60 percent of the world’s cobalt originates in the Congo, where hand-dug mines rife with dangers attract legions of poorly-equipped, “artisanal” miners who work for as little as $2 a day.

Apple, HP, Samsung SDI, and Sony have joined an effort, known as the Responsible Cobalt Initiative. It is being led by a Chinese business group, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce for Metals, Minerals & Chemicals, and supported by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), according to the group.

Members of the initiative pledged to follow OECD guidelines for mining supply chains, which call for companies to trace how cobalt is being extracted, transported, manufactured and sold. Any abuses would require immediate correction.

While advocacy groups have alleged for years that cobalt was posing deadly risks to miners and causing environmental damage, eradicating the worst abuses has proven difficult because tracing cobalt in consumers products back to the mines involves global leaps – from Africa to China to world markets – and across many companies.
The Washington Post earlier this year published an investigation detailing abuses in Congo’s artisanal cobalt supply chain, showing how miners – including children – worked in dangerous, at times deadly conditions as they tunneled hundreds of feet underground for dollars a day to reach this precious mineral. The article also showed the potential health effects, including birth defects, that medical researchers have begun to connect to the mining activity. The Post for the first time connected this troubling artisanal cobalt trade with the batteries used by some of the world’s largest technology companies, including Apple.

Apple acknowledged that this cobalt has made its way into some of its batteries and said it was committed to working with its supplier to addressing underlying issues, such as extreme poverty, that result in harsh work conditions and child labor.

The role of the Chinese business organization in the new initiative is considered a key advantage – the bulk of the supply chain runs through that country. Several companies with key roles in refining and packaging the mineral for batteries have joined the initiative, including Zhejiang Huayou, a Chinese company that buys cobalt from Congo miners, and which was featured in The Post’s coverage.

“The problem cannot be fixed by one company. So I think it’s great, surprising even, that so many companies have come together,” said Bryce Lee, Huayou’s new manager for responsible sourcing.

The new initiative is “a very positive sign of change, ” said Tyler Gillard, project head for the OECD. “Such strong involvement of Chinese industry in particular is uncommon for these types of initiatives, and really exciting.”

Collectively, the group is aiming to promote cooperation with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Separately, a business group known as The Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition announced a new “Responsible Raw Materials Initiative.”

The EICC said companies need to expand scrutiny of their supply chains beyond the traditional four “conflict” minerals covered by U.S. legislation — tin, tungsten, tantalum and gold. These minerals, when taken from the Congo region, receive extra attention because of potential ties to funding militias.

The EICC said the decision to begin looking at other minerals was motivated by “a growing body of research” – including work by advocacy groups and The Post — that showed abuses occurred in the production of other minerals, too.

Bob Mitchell, EICC vice president for social and environmental responsibility, said one of the minerals the initiative is considering is cobalt from Congo.
The EICC announced its new “Responsible Raw Materials Initiative” last month, just before the start of a United Nations forum on business and human rights.

Membership in the EICC includes Apple, Dell, Foxconn, Ford Motors and other companies, and at least 16 EICC-member companies have signed pledges to support the new initiative, Mitchell said.

Exactly what to do about the artisanal mining of cobalt is a matter of heated debate. The practice is rife with dangers. On the other hand, it also helps desperately poor people to make a living, particularly in the rural areas of the DRC.

Some longstanding critics of the cobalt supply chain view the Responsible Cobalt Initiative merely as a good first step.

“Implementation is obviously what it’s all about,” said Mark Dummett, an Amnesty researcher who has studied the cobalt supply chains. “We’d now like to see the downstream companies like Apple and Samsung disclose the names of their cobalt smelters as well as disclose the risks they have identified in their supply chains.”

Companies said a collective effort such as this is required to eradicate any abuses in the cobalt supply chain.

“HP recognizes that in order to build leverage over supply chain actors that we do not have a direct business relationship with, we need to work with other companies and organizations to drive collective action,” Jay Celorie, HP Global Program Manager, Human Rights, Ethics and Compliance, said in a statement.

Other companies, such as Tesla and LG Chem, said they are weighing membership in the Responsible Cobalt Initiative or undertaking other ways of ensuring that their supply chains are clean and humane.

“We are evaluating a number of new international initiatives to address the issues in cobalt production and are working quickly to determine how Tesla can be most effectively involved,” a Tesla spokesperson said in a statement.

Other industry groups are responding to complaints about the cobalt supply chain, too.

Last week, Umicore, a large Brussels-based maker of battery parts and other cobalt products, announced that the auditing firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers had validated the safeguards it has in place to prevent the use of any cobalt arising from questionable environmental or labor practices. Among other things, the company seeks to be able to trace the origins of every bit of cobalt that goes into its products.

Company officials said that seeking the third-party validation of their cobalt procedures should ease the concerns of the consumer companies that are their customers.

“Our customers have valuable brands to protect,” said Marc Van Sande, executive vice-president of a company business unit said. This “approach provides comfort to customers about the provenance and the ethical nature of the cobalt used in the materials they source.”

HTC Schedules Product Announcement for January 12; New Smartphone Expected

HTC has started sending media invites for an event on January 12 where the company says it will make its “next big announcement.” The company has shared a teaser invite with “for U” as a tagline. Unfortunately, not many details about HTC’s upcoming announcement are available right now.

HTC Schedules Product Announcement for January 12; New Smartphone ExpectedIt’s worth noting that the January 12 launch date is just after the CES week which means HTC doesn’t want its announcement to get lost in a host of launches during the event. The Taiwanese company has not dropped any hints in the invite for the launch event, however, recent rumours have pointed to the launch of the HTC X10 mid-range smartphone in January. The event could also see the launch of the company’s next flagship or be about the company’s recent virtual reality push, or both.

Another recent report claimed that HTC has been working on its next flagship, the HTC 11. According to initial rumours, HTC 11 may sport a 5.5-inch QHD (1440×2560) display and run on Android 7.0 Nougat customised with HTC’s Sense 8 UI on top. The handset is rumoured to pack a dual-camera setup of 12-megapixel at the back while an 8-megapixel front-facing camera is also expected on board. Under the hood, the HTC 11 is expected to be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 CPU, along with Adreno 540 GPU for graphic performance. It is said to pack a whopping 8GB of RAM under the hood, with an inbuilt storage of 256GB. The device is said to be backed by a 3700mAh battery. According to rumours, HTC’s next flagship will launched with a price tag of $691 (roughly Rs. 47,000). However, all these leaks should be taken with a pinch of salt as HTC has not mentioned anything about the upcoming device and the leaks legitimacy remains questionable.

Microsoft’s $26 Billion LinkedIn Acquisition Gets EU Approval; Deal to Close in Coming Days

Microsoft’s $26 Billion LinkedIn Acquisition Gets EU Approval; Deal to Close in Coming DaysMicrosoft won EU antitrust approval on Tuesday for its $26 billion bid for professional social network LinkedIn, its largest ever acquisition, after agreeing to a series of modest concessions.

The deal, which has already received the green light in the United States, Canada, Brazil and South Africa, would close in the coming days following the EU clearance, said Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president and chief legal officer.

“With this regulatory process behind us, we can bring together two great companies and focus on even broader issues for the future,” he said in a blog.

The US software company is aiming to enhance its core business products with LinkedIn’s suite of sales, marketing and recruiting services, allowing it to better compete with rivals in next-generation computing.

LinkedIn generates the bulk of its $3 billion (roughly Rs. 20,375 crores) annual revenue from job hunters and recruiters who pay a monthly fee to post resumes and connect with people.

The European Commission, which in recent months has signalled concerns about companies acquiring rivals with valuable data and the potential negative impact on competition, said the concessions addressed its concerns.
“These networks are important for professionals to connect and interact and to find new career opportunities. Today’s decision ensures that Europeans will continue to enjoy a freedom of choice between professional social networks,” European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said.
Reuters had flagged the imminent EU approval on November 23.

To secure EU approval for its largest ever deal, Microsoft will let LinkedIn rivals access its Office add-in programme, crucial for integrating their services with its Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel programmes.

It will also allow computer makers the option of installing or removing LinkedIn on its Windows operating system, and give competing networks access to Microsoft Graph for software developers. The concessions will be in force in Europe for five years.

US software company Salesforce, which lost out on the bid for LinkedIn and had urged regulators to take a tough line on the deal, said enforcers should not drop their guard.

“Given Microsoft’s history and existing monopolies, it will be necessary for antitrust enforcement agencies to be vigilant to ensure that Microsoft operates in a manner that promotes competition, rather than stifles it,” Salesforce said in a statement.

Sony Announces First iPhone and Android Games Including Hot Shots Golf, Yo-kai Watch, Project Field, and More

Last month we reported that Sony would be announcing renewed efforts in mobile gaming via its newly created studio ForwardWorks. At an event in Japan, the company unveiled what could be expected in the year to come.

Classic original PlayStation role-playing games such as Arc The Lad and Wild Arms will see mobile variants as would Parappa The Rapper — a rhythm game for the original PlayStation as well. Hot Shot Golfs will see an entry on mobile as would strategy role-playing game franchise Disgaea.

Sony Announces First iPhone and Android Games Including Hot Shots Golf, Yo-kai Watch, Project Field, and MoreOther announcements include Project Field — a card collection platform where actual physical cards will work with a smartphone app (pictured above). Yo-Kai Watch for mobile will be a part of this. The series is exceedingly popular in Japan on the Nintendo 3DS with entries selling as well as Pokemon.

Square Enix will also work with ForwardWorks on a joint project. Details will be announced at a later date.
Sony PlayStation games coming to Android and iOS:

No Heroes Allowed! DASH!
Arc The Lad Wild Arms
Doko Demo Issho
Boku no Natsuyasumi
Sora to Umi no Aida (translates to The Space Between Sora and Umi, a new IP helmed by Sakura Wars creator Oji Hiroi)
Safe to say, these will be initially for Japan and certain parts of Asia, with a global rollout afterwards. Barring Project Field and Yo-Kai Watch for Project Field, everything else has graced PlayStation consoles in one way or another.

In the past Run Sackboy! Run! a spin-off of popular PlayStation platformer LittleBigPlanet graced mobile devices as did Knack’s Quest and Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus. There have been a host of companion apps as well for games like Beyond: Two Souls, SingStar, and Until Dawn.

This time around, its efforts appear to be directed towards revenue generation rather than the aforementioned games and apps that were meant for promotional purposes.

“ForwardWorks will leverage the intellectual property of the numerous PlayStation dedicated software titles and its gaming characters as well as the knowledge and know-how of gaming development expertise which was acquired over the years with PlayStation business to provide gaming application optimised for smart devices including smartphones to users in Japan and Asia. The company will aim to deliver users with opportunity to casually enjoy full-fledged game titles in the new filed of the smart device market,” a press release from the company read when it announced the formation of ForwardWorks.

Instagram Will Soon Let You Like Comments, or Even Turn Them Off Completely

In the next few weeks, Instagram is going to look even more like its parent company, Facebook. The social network announced Tuesday that it will let users like individual comments on Instagram posts, much as they can on Facebook. Users can show their appreciation for a comment with a little red heart, as opposed to the big red heart already used for liking posts.

The company’s stated reason for adding these small hearts is a little different than the old Facebook thumbs-up. The company says it’s trying to create a more welcoming environment.

“Liking lets you show support and encourages positivity throughout the community,” said chief executive Kevin Systrom in a company blog post. Along with the hearts, Systrom’s post announced two new safety-related features: the ability to turn off comments on posts, and the option to let users quietly boot followers they no longer want to follow their private accounts.

Systrom said that while some accounts have been able to stop the flow of comments in the past, the option will be open to all of Instagram’s 500 million users in the coming weeks.
In the blog post, the the network also pointed out that it’s possible for users to anonymously report posts that suggest self-harm; Instagram connects users whose friends have reported concerns about their posts with organizations that can help with those issues. The company has used a version of this reporting tool on its network since October.
Instagram Will Soon Let You Like Comments, or Even Turn Them Off CompletelyThe safety features could be seen as part of an ongoing effort at Instagram to curb harassment. In September, Instagram began allowing users to apply filters to their comment streams, which allowed them to cut out offensive reactions to their posts. Instagram, like nearly every other social network, has struggled with the best strategy for dealing with harassment without crossing a line into censorship.

Most users – at least, one would hope – will probably not have to turn off comments, report self-harm or remove followers from their accounts due to harassment. But pretty much every Instagram user will see the option to like comments; whether they’ll use the option in the spirit in which it was intended remains to be seen.

HTC One M9 Starts Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat Update

Soon after Google released the final build of Android 7.0 Nougat, HTC announced that the HTC 10, HTC One M9, and HTC One A9 will receive the update sometime in the fourth quarter. Keeping its promise, HTC has rolled out the latest version of Android to unlocked HTC One M9 users. The company has also announced that carrier variants will receive the update sometime in the coming weeks.

HTC announced on its social media channels that the HTC One M9 unlocked variants will start receiving the update. The carrier variants won’t get it before the end of this year though. The update should arrive via an OTA, and to manually check if you’ve received it, head to the Settings menu.

HTC One M9 Starts Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat UpdateLast week, owners of unlocked HTC 10 units also started receiving the Android 7.0 Nougat update. This means that the HTC One A9 is the only phone remaining to get the Nougat update before the promised deadline. In any case, the company has not been able to keep its promise that it made back in March.

After the launch of company’s One A9 smartphone, HTC made a bold claim that the unlocked version of the smartphone will get “every” Android update “within 15 days” of it being pushed to Google’s Nexus devices. While we aren’t sure the amount of asterisks that were attached to this statement, the company hasn’t kept its word of a 15-day update release promise.

In any case, let’s hope that HTC manages to keep its latest promise of the Nougat release for its select smartphone before the end of the fourth quarter. With 2017 on the horizon, the HTC One A9 should be getting the update soon.
