Nokia 3310 Reboot, Nokia 8, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 to Launch at MWC 2017: Live Blog

All eyes are on the Nokia MWC 2017 event, where as many as four new Nokia handsets are expected to launch. Rumours point to the likes of flagship Nokia 8 phone and Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 affordable Android smartphones being launched at the event, but the centre of attraction will be the Nokia 3310 reboot, which will take us all on a trip down memory lane and bring back memories of the early 2000s. Amidst all this, the Nokia 6 – available only in China at present – will also make an appearance, and may even go global, if reports are to be believed.

The Nokia 3310 reboot is expected to be a feature phone roots running the Series 30+ user interface. It is said to have basic multimedia features and come with swappable faceplates in multiple colours. The design is said to remain similar to the original’s but be a little slimmer and weigh a little less; it is also said to have a slightly bigger screen, and the physical alphanumeric keyboard’s key size and key structure may be changed. Rumours suggest that Nokia 3310 reboot will be priced at EUR 59 (roughly Rs. 4,000), positioning it as a secondary phone for the nostalgic Nokia fans.

ZTE Gigabit Phone Launched at MWC 2017, World’s First 5G-Ready Smartphone

Chinese telecoms giant ZTE unveiled Sunday what it said is the world’s first smartphone compatible with the lightening-fast 5G mobile Internet service that networks expect to have up and running by 2020.

ZTE Gigabit Phone Launched at MWC 2017, World's First 5G-Ready Smartphone

The company said the Gigabit Phone is the first smartphone capable of download speeds reaching up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) – up to 10 times faster than the first generation of 4G services widely in use today.

The device, unveiled in Barcelona in northeastern Spain on the eve of the start on Monday of the Mobile World Congress, the world’s biggest mobile fair, will allow for 360-degree panoramic Virtual Reality video and fast downloads of ultra Hi-Fi music and videos.

“With the new device, the way people stay connected will be changed forever. Focusing on 5G technologies will be one of the key priorities of ZTE’s global development,” a ZTE spokesman said.

Tech firms are racing to develop products that will be compatible with 5G, shorthand for the fifth generation of networks, which promise blazing fast connectivity for a generation used to streaming movies and TV directly to phones.

South Korean carrier KT Corp aims to offer trial 5G services during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The first large-scale commercial deployment of the technology is expected in 2020.

Forrester analyst Thomas Husson said ZTE was using the phone to “showcase innovation” and “offer a glimpse into the future when people will be able to download full movies in seconds” but it was not likely to be a big seller.

“The sad reality is that this smartphone will not end up in consumers’ pockets because both 5G and Virtual Reality are still years away to be a mass-market consumer reality,” he added.

Founded in 1985, ZTE offers telecom equipment and services and has customers in more than 160 countries, according to the company.

It is the only Chinese smartphone vendor with a meaningful presence in the United States, where its 10 percent market share makes it the fourth-largest vendor.

HTC Schedules Product Announcement for January 12; New Smartphone Expected

HTC has started sending media invites for an event on January 12 where the company says it will make its “next big announcement.” The company has shared a teaser invite with “for U” as a tagline. Unfortunately, not many details about HTC’s upcoming announcement are available right now.

HTC Schedules Product Announcement for January 12; New Smartphone ExpectedIt’s worth noting that the January 12 launch date is just after the CES week which means HTC doesn’t want its announcement to get lost in a host of launches during the event. The Taiwanese company has not dropped any hints in the invite for the launch event, however, recent rumours have pointed to the launch of the HTC X10 mid-range smartphone in January. The event could also see the launch of the company’s next flagship or be about the company’s recent virtual reality push, or both.

Starting with the HTC X10, the successor to the HTC One X9 is said to launch in January and cost around CNY 2,000 (roughly Rs. 19,500). It is said to sport a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920) display, a 2GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 processor (Cortex-A53 cores), Mali-T860 GPU, 3GB of RAM, and a 13-megapixel rear camera with OIS.

Another recent report claimed that HTC has been working on its next flagship, the HTC 11. According to initial rumours, HTC 11 may sport a 5.5-inch QHD (1440×2560) display and run on Android 7.0 Nougat customised with HTC’s Sense 8 UI on top. The handset is rumoured to pack a dual-camera setup of 12-megapixel at the back while an 8-megapixel front-facing camera is also expected on board. Under the hood, the HTC 11 is expected to be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 CPU, along with Adreno 540 GPU for graphic performance. It is said to pack a whopping 8GB of RAM under the hood, with an inbuilt storage of 256GB. The device is said to be backed by a 3700mAh battery. According to rumours, HTC’s next flagship will launched with a price tag of $691 (roughly Rs. 47,000). However, all these leaks should be taken with a pinch of salt as HTC has not mentioned anything about the upcoming device and the leaks legitimacy remains questionable.

Sony Announces First iPhone and Android Games Including Hot Shots Golf, Yo-kai Watch, Project Field, and More

Last month we reported that Sony would be announcing renewed efforts in mobile gaming via its newly created studio ForwardWorks. At an event in Japan, the company unveiled what could be expected in the year to come.

In the past Run Sackboy! Run! a spin-off of popular PlayStation platformer LittleBigPlanet graced mobile devices as did Knack’s Quest and Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus. There have been a host of companion apps as well for games like Beyond: Two Souls, SingStar, and Until Dawn.

This time around, its efforts appear to be directed towards revenue generation rather than the aforementioned games and apps that were meant for promotional purposes.

“ForwardWorks will leverage the intellectual property of the numerous PlayStation dedicated software titles and its gaming characters as well as the knowledge and know-how of gaming development expertise which was acquired over the years with PlayStation business to provide gaming application optimised for smart devices including smartphones to users in Japan and Asia. HTC One M9 Starts Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat Update

Soon after Google released the final build of Android 7.0 Nougat, HTC announced that the HTC 10, HTC One M9, and HTC One A9 will receive the update sometime in the fourth quarter. Keeping its promise, HTC has rolled out the latest version of Android to unlocked HTC One M9 users. The company has also announced that carrier variants will receive the update sometime in the coming weeks.

HTC announced on its social media channels that the HTC One M9 unlocked variants will start receiving the update. The carrier variants won’t get it before the end of this year though. The update should arrive via an OTA, and to manually check if you’ve received it, head to the Settings menu.

HTC One M9 Starts Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat UpdateLast week, owners of unlocked HTC 10 units also started receiving the Android 7.0 Nougat update. This means that the HTC One A9 is the only phone remaining to get the Nougat update before the promised deadline. In any case, the company has not been able to keep its promise that it made back in March.

After the launch of company’s One A9 smartphone, HTC made a bold claim that the unlocked version of the smartphone will get “every” Android update “within 15 days” of it being pushed to Google’s Nexus devices. While we aren’t sure the amount of asterisks that were attached to this statement, the company hasn’t kept its word of a 15-day update release promise.

In any case, let’s hope that HTC manages to keep its latest promise of the Nougat release for its select smartphone before the end of the fourth quarter. With 2017 on the horizon, the HTC One A9 should be getting the update soon.

OnePlus 3T Name Seemingly Confirmed by Company Website Hours Before Launch

OnePlus 3T Name Seemingly Confirmed by Company Website Hours Before LaunchEarlier this month, OnePlus confirmed that it will be launching its next device with Snapdragon 821 processor on November 15. The company’s teasers from earlier this week further suggested that it will launch OnePlus 3T smartphone at its event on Tuesday, which kicks off at 11:30pm IST. Now, the company’s website has seemingly confirmed the name ‘OnePlus 3T’ for the smartphone.

The company’s website is currently showing the ‘error 404’ page with a fun little mini-game if you try adjusting the URL by adding ‘3t’ at the end and reach the page “http://oneplus.net/3t” reports Phone Arena. The report notes that this custom error 404 page could not be accessed by any of the other URL adjustments that were tried – we tried as well, and were also unable to reproduce the special 404 page.

This indicates that the smartphone will indeed be named ‘OnePlus 3T’ and as it is company’s official site, the name seems to be all but confirmed.
Earlier leaks have suggested that the OnePlus 3T will come with Sony’s latest IMX398 sensor onboard. It is further expected to sport an Optic AMOLED display and run on Android 7.0 Nougat-based OxygenOS. It is expected to house a large 3300mAh battery.
The Snapdragon 821 chipset on the smartphone will be paired with 6GB of RAM and the smartphone is tipped to come in storage options of 32GB and 64GB. The OnePlus 3T is expected to be priced at $479 (roughly Rs. 32,100) – $80 more than the OnePlus 3, which is priced at Rs. 27,999 in India.

As all these leaked specifications have not been confirmed by the company, we will have to wait till the official announcement by the company. However, as the launch is scheduled to be later on Tuesday, we will not have to wait long for the confirmation.

Deutsche Telekom puts sale of T-Mobile US on hold

Experian has raised $600 million share buyback programme by $200 million using proceeds from recent divestments.Deutsche Telekom has put the sale of T-Mobile US on hold to deal with an upcoming auction of radio airwaves, giving potential suitors time to wait for a more favourable political environment towards telecoms mergers, two sources said.

The US federal communications commission is due to start an auction for low-frequency airwaves at the end of this month, which industry observers expect could last for months.

“During that period, there will be no M&A activity in the US telecoms sector,” said one person familiar with the situation on Tuesday.

Auction participants are not allowed to engage in any partnership or merger talks during the weeks before and after the bidding process. T-Mobile US, which is 65.4% owned by Deutsche Telekom, has said it could spend up to $10 billion in the auction.

An auction of AWS-3 airwaves, which ended early last year, raised a record $44.9 billion.

Deutsche Telekom, which declined to comment, has been trying to sell the unit for years, hoping to cash in on a recovery in the business.

Last month T-Mobile US’s net profit nearly tripled in the fourth quarter after it added more than 2 million customers.

Last year it overtook Sprint to become the third largest provider.

An attempt to sell T-Mobile to Sprint in 2014 was blocked by US regulators and last year talks between T-Mobile US and Dish Network Corp stalled.

Deutsche Telekom has always said it was under no pressure to sell but that it would consider any offer.

Deutsche Telekom shares pared gains to stand 0.2% higher at 1429 GMT.

Freedom251 sets off alarm bells, firm to refund money

Is the Rs 251 smartphone, Freedom251, turning out to be too good to be true? While the skepticism over the company’s ability to sell the phone at such a low price continues unabated, new problems are piling up-—the latest being the possible shut down of its Noida office.

The company, Ringing Bells, has also faced queries from Income Tax department, the Enforcement Directorate and Department of Electronics and IT. ED officials are understood to have quizzed the promoters of the company on their business model. When contacted by TOI on Wednesday, Ashok Chadha, the president of the company and the main associate of promoter Mohit Goel, said, “all is well”.
He denied reports that the company had shut shop in Noida. “We are very much in business, and are not running away,” he told TOI. “The problem with our office has to do with the owner of the plot who seems to be having a issues with the Noida Authority for renting out a property meant for industrial use as a commercial office”, he said, clarifying that if the landlord is not able to settle issues with the authorities, the company will shift to a nearby premises.

Questions have also been raised on the advance payment accepted by the company for future deliveries of smartphones. Chadha clarified that the company had received nearly Rs 75 lakh in online booking from 30,000 prospective customers, which it now plans to refund. “This money never came to us and was not even supposed to come to us until we deliver the handsets. That’s in line with the compliance rules of the payment gateway. In any case, we have now decided to refund this money and will go for cash-on-delivery,” Chadha said. TOI could not verify whether those who had paid the advance had received refund.

The company maintains it will start delivering the phones from April 15 at the committed price of Rs 251, on which it will earn a profit of Rs 31. “Our business plan is intact. As far as funding is concerned, we are running short cycles (of orders), and thus will require only some money,” Chadha said, without elaborating further on the sources of funding. There has also been trouble for the company from a Noida-based BPO, Cyfuture, which provided call center services for booking and enquiries about the phone. Cyfuture has filed a police complaint alleging non-payment of dues by Ringing Bells. Ringing Bells claims that the BPO failed to provide satisfactory services and its contract has been terminated.

Smartphones to dominate handset sales by 2020

Smartphones would constitute 98% of handset sales by 2020, according to a study by US-based market research firm iGR.

“Many factors are driving the global increase in smartphone sales. First and foremost is the decrease in smartphone prices, which is making them more accessible in developing markets,” marketwired said citing the statement of Iain Gillott, president and founder of iGR, on Tuesday.

“The consumers in these developing markets are increasingly moving towards smartphones, which provide a portable, data-driven lifestyle,” he added.

Due to this development, out of a total of almost two billion mobile handsets that were sold during 2015, sales of smartphones were significantly greater than those of non-smartphones, according to iGR’s ‘Global Handset and Smartphone Sales Forecast, 2015-2020: Still More Smartphones’.
